5 Signs your aircraft might be asking for maintenance

Your aircraft is talking. Are you listening?

You don’t always have to wait for your next MPI to know something isn’t right.

Whether you fly a Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, Air Tractor or King Air, your aircraft will usually give you warning signs long before a small issue becomes an expensive repair. Knowing what to look for can save you money, reduce downtime and, most importantly, keep you flying safely.

Here are five signs your aircraft shouldn’t be ignored.

It doesn’t feel like it normally does

Pilots know their aircraft.

If the controls feel different, there’s a new vibration, or something simply feels “off”, trust your instincts.

It could be:

A propeller imbalance
Worn engine mounts
Loose cowling or panels
Landing gear wear

If it feels different today than it did yesterday, it’s worth getting checked.

You notice fresh leaks

A few stains on the hangar floor might not be unusual. Fresh oil, hydraulic fluid, brake fluid or fuel leaking from the aircraft is another story.

Don’t assume it’ll sort itself out. A small leak today can become a grounded aircraft tomorrow.

The engine isn’t performing normally

Your engine should start, run and perform consistently.

Pay attention if you notice:

Rough running
Hard starting
Higher oil consumption
Increased fuel burn
Higher-than-normal CHT or oil temperatures
Reduced power during take-off

These are often early signs that your AME should investigate.

New noises you haven’t heard before

Aircraft speak before they fail.

Grinding.
Knocking.
Whining.
Squealing.

If your aircraft suddenly sounds different, don’t just turn the radio up.

A strange noise is usually your aircraft telling you something needs attention.

You’re hoping it’ll go away

This is probably the biggest warning sign.

If you’ve found yourself saying:

“It’s probably nothing.”

“It’ll be fine until the next MPI.”

“I’ll mention it next time.”

It’s time to phone your AMO.

Small defects rarely repair themselves, and they’re almost always cheaper to fix early.

Prevention starts with attention.

Preventative maintenance isn’t just about complying with SACAA regulations or completing your MPI on time.

It’s about protecting your investment, avoiding unexpected downtime and giving yourself confidence every time you line up on the runway.
